We came into this world
Wrapped in a blanket of warm innocence
Minds freed uncluttered
The world was a beautiful place
Warm hands, warm milk, warm breasts
Nourished our growing spirits
People, like flowers
Opened up to us
Their hearts red with blood
Flowed into theirs
Unfettered
Spring
Summer
Fall
Winter
Here we are
Looking at each other
From across the room
Trying to relight that candle of innocence
That once flamed between us
And brightened our faces
How do we recapture that glow
Where did it go?
It went the way of education, religion, and culture
That inoculated us with the politics of difference
That hardened our hearts
Against the spirit of unity
It is time to re-establish
The nature of our hearts
That was made to love without conditions
Without convoluted egotistical emotions
That erect unnecessary barrier
It’s time we look into the mirror
And see our true identities
That has to do without spiritual verities.
